Roombo: First Blood review - You Messed With The Wrong Robot Vacuum Cleaner

In Roombo: First Blood your task is simple: take control of the cute little robot vacuum cleaner, "defend" the house then get rid of the clues. Morbid indie fun, what's not to like about it?

Setting

The story of the game is quite simple: the house owner leaves for the night, thieves arrive and you have to take care of them any means necessary.

The game starts out cute but it changes tone when the rampage starts. Fortunately it's a rather short game so it remains funny enough till the end.

It has an interesting take on the topic of smart homes, that's for sure but it's still not as crazy as Serious Sam 2.

Roombo: First Blood Gameplay

The game has six levels all of which take place in the same house. Your job is to prevent the thieves to steal the valuables from the house in a given time period. The game allows you to use agressive and stealthy playstyles, too.

While the thieves roam the house, you need to set traps and activate various smart home gadgets to attack them. If the bad guys notice the robot, they start chasing and kicking it. However, the robot may be small, but it's not harmless: when it gets angry enough, it can run over the unfortunate trespassers.

A level looks like this:
  • warm-up,
  • battle with the thieves,
  • cleanup.

As you progress in the game, you have to fight more bad guys and defend more valuables. It's not a particularly hard game but it takes a couple turns to get better results in the later levels. Controlling the yellow beast and activating the appliances is quite simple: you have the basic mode, and you have a special hack mode which also slows down time. Some examples for the clever use of clever tools:
  • lamps can stun the thieves,
  • smart light switches can shock them,
  • automatic doors can slam them,
  • dropped ceiling fans... well, imagine the impact.
After you're done with the burglars, you have to cleanup their footprints, body... parts and the pools of blood in a short amount of time while listening to some cute background music.

For the first try I finished all six levels in about 90 minutes. It's a short game with a friendly price.

Where to get it

Roombo: First Blood System Requirements

The recommended system requirements are the following (source is Steam):
  • operating system: Windows 7 or newer, 64-bit
  • processor: 2.8GHz quad-core CPU
  • GPU: Geforce GTX 960 or equivalent
  • storage space: 300 MB
  • sound card: DirectX compatible
I used this machine:
  • operating system: Windows 7, 64-bit
  • processor: 3.3GHz, 2 cores, 4 threads, Intel i3-3220,
  • GPU: AMD HD6670 with 1 GB of DDR3 memory,
  • memory: 8 GB DDR3
The resolution I used was 1280x720 with ultra settings. The game ran reasonably well, however, I could feel it definitely needed some extra juice from the GPU. I'll take a look at it later when I switch back to my Nvidia GTX 1050.
